The flight is booked, the suitcase is almost closed and the question we usually leave until the end appears: how are we getting to the airport?

Taxi and parking can both be good options, but the answer changes a lot depending on where you live, what time you fly, how many of you are travelling and how much luggage you have.

Because leaving from the city centre is not the same as leaving from a town in the metropolitan area, another province, Andorra or the south of France.

Why this decision matters more than it seems on holiday

On relatively short trips, the return transfer to the airport can easily represent between 5% and 15% of the total budget.

How much does a taxi to the airport really cost?

In Barcelona, the price is calculated based on the flag-down fare, kilometres or waiting time and supplements: in 2026, the airport supplement is 4.60 euros, and the kilometre fare is higher at night, on Saturdays and on public holidays.

In addition, if you travel in high season, the journey and, as a result, the cost can rise significantly.

Besides, the city centre does not represent every traveller.

For those living in Terrassa, Mataró, Girona, Tarragona, Toledo or Guadalajara —or arriving at El Prat from Andorra or France— two taxi journeys easily exceed the urban reference.

As a reference, a taxi from Terrassa can cost around 70 euros per journey, and from Guadalajara it can be around 80-90 euros per journey.

It is also worth checking whether there is real availability at your departure time, how much a large vehicle costs and what happens if the flight lands late.

How much does long-stay parking cost?

The alternative to a taxi is taking your own car to the airport and leaving it in long-stay parking.

A well-chosen option combines full control over the outward journey with a price that is usually more competitive the more days you are away.

  If you leave from the city centre and the timings work, a taxi can be a good alternative. In these cases, the price difference compared with parking may be small.

• You leave at dawn, return at night or live far from the airport.

  In these cases, having your car waiting for you usually provides more peace of mind and a much more predictable cost than depending on taxi availability.

• You are travelling as a couple for a weekend getaway.

  If you leave from the centre, it is worth comparing both options. When you carry several suitcases or the flight leaves very early, having your own car can pay off, even if the stay is short.

• You are travelling as a family or group.

  Here, parking is usually the most practical option. The price does not increase because of the number of passengers or the luggage, while a taxi may require booking a larger vehicle or even two. And that is without counting the extra space needed for a pushchair or child seat.

• You are carrying a lot of luggage or bulky equipment.
